California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that he will postpone any clemency decisions regarding Erik and Lyle Menendez until Los Angeles County District Attorney-elect Nathan Hochman thoroughly reviews their case.

The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 for the 1989 murders of their parents and are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Outgoing District Attorney George Gascón had recently recommended resentencing the brothers, citing new evidence that may support their claims of enduring sexual abuse by their father and assessing that they no longer pose a threat to society.

Gascón’s proposal includes reducing their sentences to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole consideration.

The Governor’s Office noted that they will await Hochman’s review and analysis of the Menendez case before making clemency decisions.

Hochman has expressed his intention to conduct a comprehensive examination of the case files and consult with involved parties before considering any resentencing actions.
